Turquoise Hopi Corn

5.99$

10 x / pack

The breathtaking blue corn we offer is an incredible variety that originated with the Hopi people of the southwest. These magnificent spikes are a spectacular color, ranging from slate blue to vibrant turquoise with some surprising pops of purple. Traditionally used locally in atole and ground to make cornmeal, these grains are distinguished by their texture that is both floury and crunchy, often with both types of grains on the same cob.

The ears generally measure between 6 and 12 inches in length and are produced in a single specimen per stalk, which stands proudly 4 to 5 feet in height. A remarkable feature of this variety is its ability to grow even at an altitude of 8,000 feet, demonstrating its high tolerance to temperature variations and cool soils. Furthermore, this variety reaches maturity relatively early, being ready to harvest approximately 90 days after sowing.

We are proud to collaborate with a grower who received his first Hopi blue corn seeds in 1986, thanks to John “Eesawu” Kimmey. This visionary, specialist in sustainable indigenous agriculture, worked closely with the Hopi people and founded the Talavaya Center, one of the first heritage conservation projects.

Discover this unique variety of corn, which will dazzle your senses with its vibrant colors and rich history. A true tribute to Hopi culture and the resilience of their ancestral agricultural practices.
