🥝 Mini Kiwi Kiwaï — Actinidia arguta
A hardy vine producing exotic fruits
The Mini Kiwi, also known as Kiwaï or Hardy Kiwi (Actinidia arguta), is a perennial climbing vine that produces small, sweet, smooth green fruits that can be eaten whole without peeling. Cold-resistant, decorative, flavorful, and easy to grow, the kiwaï is an excellent choice for Canadian gardeners looking for both originality and productivity.
🏡 Adaptation to the Canadian climate
Kiwaï is particularly well adapted to Canada’s climate, including many regions of Québec. It tolerates winter temperatures down to –30 °C and naturally enters dormancy during harsh winters. Ideal for zones 4 to 6.
🔸 Light: Full sun to partial shade
🔸 Soil: Rich, loose, slightly acidic, well-drained
🔸 Support: Trellis, pergola, fence, or sturdy arbor
🔸 Hardiness: –30 °C
🌿 History and origins
Native to East Asia (China, Korea, Siberia, Japan), Actinidia arguta has been grown for centuries for its highly nutritious fruits. Introduced to Europe and North America in the 20th century, it is now prized in northern orchards for its cold resistance, generous yields, and ornamental appeal.
🧬 Pollination and plant identification
Mini Kiwi is a dioecious plant, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate plants. To produce fruit, you must plant both a male vine and one or several female vines.
⚠️ Mandatory pairing: Plant 1 male for every 5 to 6 females to ensure proper pollination. Select plants accordingly.
🌱 Seed germination (indoor sowing)
For those starting from seed, follow these steps:
Cold stratification:
Place seeds in a moist substrate (peat + vermiculite) in the refrigerator for 90 days.
Sowing:
After stratification, sow seeds 1 cm deep in moist seed-starting mix.
Germination temperature: 20–25 °C
Germination time: 15 to 45 days
Light: Indirect light; avoid direct sun
Transplanting: When seedlings reach 8–10 cm in height
🍂🌿 Outdoor fall sowing
Kiwaï can also be sown directly outdoors in fall, which naturally reproduces cold-stratification conditions.
Ideal period: Late September to early November
Preparation: Choose a well-drained, sunny or semi-shaded spot
Method:
-
Sow seeds 1 cm deep in loose, rich soil
-
Cover with fine soil
-
Mark the location with a winter-resistant label
-
Mulch lightly to protect from extreme temperature swings
Result: Seeds will overwinter naturally and sprout the following spring.
🌱 Tip: This method works very well in Québec and all cold-temperate regions. It avoids the need for indoor stratification.
🍴 Edibility and uses
Kiwaï fruit is fully edible — skin included, like a grape. It is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber.
No part of the plant is toxic. However, only the berries are meant for consumption; the leaves and stems are not eaten.
