This early maturing corn is characterized by large plants producing two ears generally measuring between 13 and 15 cm long. Pink popcorn seeds produce premium quality popcorn, with an abundance of white, fluffy kernels, exhibiting rich flavor. The purple grains, for their part, can be used as decoration.
This variety is not meant to be eaten on the cob, but rather to be dried and popped. The plants, tall and majestic, add an attractive touch to a summer garden.
To harvest popcorn, it is recommended to allow the plants to brown and the ears to dry as long as possible in the field. Once harvested, the ears should be brown in color and the grains very dry. Then remove the husks from the cobs and hang them in mesh bags in a warm, dry, well-ventilated room, letting them dry for several weeks. The ideal humidity level for popcorn is 13 to 14%.
It is advisable to check every week by popping a few grains. If the popcorn is uneven or soft, the moisture has not yet evaporated sufficiently. However, if the taste and texture are satisfactory, any remaining grains can be removed and stored in airtight containers. They will keep like this for several years.
