Despite its name sounding like a controlled substance, the opium poppy is a harmless and charming annual flower to add to an ornamental bed or edible garden.

Like many of its cousins in the poppy family, opium poppies will sow themselves in the garden. A few seeds can give shades of deep magenta and desirable pink. On the other hand, they might sprout in the more tawny hues of cheered mauve, in which case you’re perfectly entitled to pull them off.
