Strelitzia Nicolai, also known as white bird of paradise and giant bird, is a tropical plant native to South Africa. It is popular in gardens and landscapes because of its attractive appearance and its ability to thrive in warm climates. Here are some general guidelines for growing strelitzia plants:
– Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil to plant your strelitzia. The ideal soil is rich in organic matter and slightly acidic, with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5.
– Prepare the soil by turning it with a garden fork and adding compost or well-rotted manure. This will help with proper water drainage and provide necessary nutrients to the plant.
– Plant the strelitzia in a hole twice as wide as the rootball and as deep. Carefully remove the plant from its container and spread the roots evenly in the hole.
– Fill the hole with soil, tamping gently to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly to saturate the roots.
– Water regularly, keeping the soil constantly moist, but avoid saturating it with water. Strelitzia can tolerate drought, but it will grow best with regular watering.
– Fertilize the plant once a month during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer, following the manufacturer’s instructions for the appropriate amounts.
– Protect the plant from extreme cold, as it cannot tolerate frost. If you live in an area with very cold temperatures, consider moving the plant indoors or covering it during the winter months.
– Prune the plant to keep it in the desired shape and size. Strelitzias have a naturally erect shape, similar to a fountain, and can be pruned to keep a narrow silhouette.
Soak the seeds in a thermos of lukewarm water for 24 hours, then sow them in pots of slightly damp potting soil at a temperature of 21°C and above. Germination is slow so be patient… The wait is worth it!
