Chard or chard, also called Swiss chard in Quebec, and perry in France, chard to mow, chard5 or coast in French-speaking Switzerland, jotte or jousting in western France, is a biennial herbaceous plant of the Amaranthaceae family (or Chenopodiaceae in the classical classification) cultivated as a vegetable plant for its leaves or for its ribs (or chard), eaten as a vegetable.
The name pear comes from the fact that the plant was used for vegetable puree in medieval cuisine based among other leeks. The name jotte is also explained by the Low-Latin jotta (vegetable porridge, marmalade).
