🍅 Atomic Sunset Tomato
Solanum lycopersicum
An explosion of color and flavor for your garden
✨ Overview
The Atomic Sunset Tomato is an exceptional variety, prized as much for its spectacular appearance as for its refined flavor. Each fruit looks like a miniature work of art: a glossy skin blending orange, red, and yellow tones in a sunset-like gradient, often accented with subtle marbling and streaks. Its flesh is juicy, sweet, and perfectly balanced between sugar and acidity, making it an outstanding fresh-eating tomato.
The fruits are about ping-pong ball size, as shown in the photo—ideal for salads, tasting plates, and colorful culinary creations.
🌱 Germination & Care
(Adapted for Canada & Quebec)
Indoor sowing
- Sowing period: Mid-March to mid-April
- Optimal germination temperature: 22–26 °C (72–79 °F)
- Germination time: 5–10 days
Transplanting
- Outdoors: After all risk of frost, usually from the second week of June in Quebec
- Exposure: Full sun, minimum 6 hours/day
- Soil: Rich, well-drained, amended with mature compost
- Spacing: 50 cm (20″) between plants
🧑🌾 Quebec climate tip:
Use dark mulch or cloches in spring to warm the soil faster. In colder zones, a greenhouse, tunnel, or protective wall greatly improves early growth and yield.
🧬 History & Origin
The Atomic Sunset Tomato is a recent creation resulting from artisanal breeding work by passionate selectors in the United States. Inspired by famous multicolored tomatoes such as Brad’s Atomic Grape, it was developed with a focus on visual beauty and refined flavor.
Its name comes from its fiery, radiant hues reminiscent of an atomic sunset. Still relatively rare, it is rapidly gaining popularity among collectors of both heirloom and modern tomatoes.
